Working dogs are confident and fearless, but pet quality dogs of this breed retain some characteristics of working dogs and make excellent personal protectors, guides and guard dogs. These powerful animals can be trusted with children only if provided with early socialization and obedience training. Most behavior problems in the breed occur because of poor training.

During each of the World Wars these dogs lost their popularity in the United States, but they recovered directly after, mostly attributed to soldiers returning from Europe with GSDs. In Germany, the dog was used as a military dog during each of the wars. Thus the breeding of these dogs began in the USA. A famous dog brought from the war by the soldiers was called Rin Tin Tin. It was actually a dog that was brought to America after World War I by a soldier named Larry Baker.
