American and European types of the breed are smaller and more suited to the role of a family pet. These types are bred mostly for temperament and conformation. In the former East Germany, the motherland of the breed, there are bloodlines that adhere closely to the old standard. Such animals are large, with a broad head and dark coat. They are praised for their unique working abilities, but most of them are very self-assured and independent, which poses a greater challenge in terms of training. Fanciers of the old standard preserve the unique characteristics of the line and try to raise it to the status of a separate breed. German shepherd dogs can be obtained from either a breeder or rescue and should receive training before leaving the kennel.
