German Shepherds Puppies - Choosing a Breeder

If you are intending to raise a German Shepherd puppy, you must be very careful when choosing the breeder. In this case, you must not be in a hurry. It is much better to wait a while and take a closer look at the potential breeder than to randomly buy a puppy that may well turn out to be faulty and 'weeded out' after the first glance at a dog show.

First, pay attention to the condition of their boarding environment and to their number. A true breeder will never have his place overcrowded with pups. If there are too many of them, it means, that you are dealing with a characterized 'puppy mill'. Of course, buying a pure pup from such a breeder is out of the question, because these so-called breeders only seek profit and 'would not care much for a little thing like purity of the breed'.

See also, how many other breeds there are in the house. Good breeders keep only one or two breeds simultaneously. How do they look? How good is the nutrition? Are they gleeful and lively, or haggard and exhausted? Are they kept safely inside the house or cloistered in long rows of cages?

It is also important that the breeder possesses a well-informed historic background on the breed. He or she should be ready to tell you as much as possible of the breed, of each pup in a separate way, of all pedigree lines. There must be health certificates, show records and documentation that prove the breeder's club membership. Remember that, only those German Shepherds, which qualify for show admission and that live up to standards truly, are non faulty and, in this respect, the choice of the right breeder is the decisive factor.
